Can Chiropractic Care Help My Headaches?

Do you suffer from frequent headaches? Are your headache medications no longer helping you get relief? You may want to consider chiropractic care for your headaches.

At Legacy Pain and Regenerative Medicine, we take a multimodal approach to pain management because no single treatment works for everyone. And when it comes to headaches, daily use of medication for relief is likely making things worse.

Our chiropractic physician, Dr. Trace Alexander, uses a number of chiropractic techniques to help our patients get relief from their headaches. Can chiropractic care help you?

Here, we want to talk about headaches and how chiropractic care brings relief.

All about headaches

Headaches are a common pain condition, affecting up to 75% of adults from all over the world every year. Though most headaches cause mild pain that goes away with at-home care, many people suffer from recurring headaches that make it hard to work, go to school, or spend time with friends and family.

There are more than 150 types of headaches, but tension-type headaches (TTH), migraines, and medication overuse headaches (MOH) are the most common and burdensome types

Tension-type headaches

With tension headaches, you have mild to moderate pain on both sides of the head. Stress and musculoskeletal problems in the neck usually cause these types of headaches.

Migraines

Migraines are chronic headaches that cause a throbbing or pulsing pain on one side of the head. Migraine pain ranges from moderate to severe and may last a few hours or a few days.

Researchers are still investigating what causes migraine headaches, but they theorize that most people develop the head pain from certain triggers such as hormonal changes, stress, muscle tension, or certain foods.

Medication overuse headaches

If you take headache medication on a regular basis and wake up with headaches that last all day, you may have MOH.

Headache treatment

Specific headache treatment depends on the type you have. However, we rarely turn to medication as the first line of treatment. Most recurring headaches have an underlying cause or trigger. Identifying what causes your head pain is a crucial part of your treatment plan.

Keeping a headache log can help you figure out what triggers your headaches. Once we know your triggers, we can design a plan that provides the best relief, including chiropractic care.

Getting help with chiropractic care

Headaches are one of the most common reasons people seek out chiropractic care. Though spinal adjustments reduce head pain by improving spine alignment and reducing muscle tension and stress, that’s not the only chiropractic treatment that can help your headaches.

We provide a number of therapies for headache pain, including:
