Pain Management Q&A
When do I need pain management?
There aren’t any rules about when to seek pain management, but as a general guideline, it’s best to get help sooner rather than later. When you get help for the pain at an early stage, you don’t just get pain relief, you may also prevent chronic pain from developing.
There are two types of pain, acute and chronic:
Acute pain
Acute pain develops following an injury or illness. By definition, acute pain lasts only a few months because it disappears as the underlying problem heals. Early treatment can diminish the pain and promote the fastest possible recovery.
Chronic pain
Chronic pain is defined as pain that lasts at least 3-6 months or that continues after your injury heals. Pain management is essential for chronic pain so you can break the ongoing pain cycle, alleviate the pain, and improve your ability to enjoy life.
When pain goes too long without treatment, it causes changes in your central nervous system. As a result, your nerves become overly sensitive and your pain increases.
What conditions often require ongoing pain management?
Your chronic pain may start with an injury or illness, such as:
- Sprains and strains
- Inflammation
- Neuropathy
- Arthritis
- Herniated disc
- Degenerative disc disease
- Fibromyalgia
- Vascular disease
- Complex regional pain syndrome
Dr. Alexander provides customized treatment that helps to reduce your pain no matter what triggered the problem.
What pain management treatments might I receive?
At your initial consultation, Dr. Alexander reviews your medical history and performs a thorough physical examination. He may also order lab tests, which are conveniently done in the office by the Legacy Pain and Regenerative Medicine phlebotomist.
As a chiropractor and nurse practitioner, Dr. Alexander offers a variety of treatments to reduce your pain and support your body’s natural healing ability. Your treatment may include one or more therapies such as:
- Medications to relieve pain
- Medications to fight infection
- Trigger point injections
- Bursa sac aspiration
- Joint injections
- Hyaluronic acid injections
- Chiropractic manipulation
- Therapeutic massage
- Acupuncture
- CBD oil
You may also be a good candidate for regenerative medicine treatments such as a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injection. PRP accelerates healing, regulates inflammation, and supports your natural stem cells as they regenerate new tissues.
If you suffer from acute or chronic pain, call Legacy Pain and Regenerative Medicine or schedule an appointment online.
